This is the literal story of the game made into anime, sections 1-3 of the story. It's not a *terrible* story; there are many good elements to it. Also in the game, they full dive virtual reality into a real world through photons or whatever. That was section 4 of the story, and totally different from 1-3. They aren't really related at all. This first episode definitely took some liberties in the gore direction, and flowed much better than I thought it would. I'll be very pleased if the entire anime is of this quality.

hmmm, WAY back in either 1990 or 91, I played Phantasy Star on my Sega Genesis ... it was a mindless eye-hand-coordination dungeon bashing game ... no thinking required ... why on Earth would I want to watch an anime about it O_o
