Is TV quality better than WEB for this series?

@leorio1009 Under normal condition (for Eng series) , WEBrip or WEB-DL is always better than TVrip. But I can assure you that the creators of Boruto didn't put much effort in this one. I have seen CR ones, they look pretty much the same. So no rip is better over the other. The only difference will be the Logo on the top right corner for this rip.

Nice to see you alive. But I really wonder why you guys still use TV-rips? Yes, web-rips from crunchy back then had really bad quality. But that changed by now. I collected all your releases so far and I really enjoy the treatment you guys offer with karaoke and Taka's original font like WCP and notWCP did. These days for new releases I follow Yakubo, He is really doing a great job. Here is the same episode by him 1080p reencoded web-rip at half the size and it has definitely a better quality. https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1292200 Not sure if you want keep the classic spirit of old fansubs alive, but it would actually be cool if you switched to web-version. I am glad you guys are back and I hope I didn't ruin your mood and passion with my feedback. As an old fan of you guys I want to see you just doing the best.

@jcraw it's because he uses HEVC which can compress about 1.5 or 2 times the size of x264; lesser bitrate higher quality. Well, for 1080p, I dun mind encoding them since there was almost no time difference between 720p and 1080p encodes and if i use HEVC on this 720p, it will be less than 300MB since the source isn't originally drawn in 1080p. I don't see difference between this one and HEVC 1080p one. Can you point me out side by side comparison on the same frame picture? @leorio Maybe or Maybe not. When I can have the BDMV files, probably it will happen.

For a start, I know reddish colors easily cause the most artifacts, like here at the beginning. https://www.imageupload.net/image/boruto1.In39t On the left is the Yakubo 200MB 1080p. You can still see the outlines, everything looks pretty much like in the 1.4GB stream-rip from Erai. On the right is your 520MB 720p version. You can clearly see in the red/pink area that it is completely pixelated to a degree that even the outline of the drawing disappears. I really think your releases would profit immensely if you would switch to a modern HEVC 1080p encode from the web-rip, there are plenty of options available here on nyaa. Preparing my next comparison.

Okay, while it is true that many anime are indeed made and animated in a lower resolution than 1080p, the "overlay" like karaoke, credits and other stuff is rendered in native 1080p: https://www.imageupload.net/image/boruto2.Inmws You can see how every font is a looot more pixelated and low res than the native 1080p encode from Yakubo. I mean you guys put so much effort into animated quality karaoke matching the style from the japanese font, but then downscale the source to 720p? Will look up another example.

Whenever a scene changes then compression artifacts are very noticeable as well, not gonna cherry pick now every scene transition, but overall while watching there is always some pixelation noticeable. As well compression artifacts are generally more easily noticeable on a lower resolution than on a higher resolution. Another issue is as usual dark scenes. Gradients in dark scenes easily look messy. Even Yakubo's mini-encode has problems here obviously with 200MB, but it still holds up better especially in motion. https://www.imageupload.net/image/boruto3.In5G8 I made a v2 with increased brightness because it is hard to see in a well lit room: https://www.imageupload.net/image/boruto3-v2-b.Incqx Both versions looks messy. Yakubo's encode sure is not flawless. He explicitly aims for a small size after all.

Overall I am not sure what your goal is. Backwards compatibility so older PC's can still play it back? But why? We are approaching 8k resolution true color screens by now. Isn't this the definitive edition for collectors? Why the old codec? why 720p? why tv-rips when there already nearly lossless 1080p webrips? I put so much effort into collecting anime back then - the good fansubs, AonE & Dattebayo Naruto 640x480 TV-rips fansubs - but now having replaced them recently with the Blu-Ray Rip from darkfire68 https://nyaa.iss.one/user/darkfire68 and the recut from Yellow Flash https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1246892 Why not go for the best quality? A future proof collection for enthusiasts? You put so much effort into it: - animated karaoke - original Taka fonts - BorderScaling=Yes - typesetting - chapters I really can't see the benefit of 8bit 720p encodes of TV-rips here.

Another disadvantage for TV-rips are broadcast notifications as well, for catastrophes like tsunamis or other major stuff, sometimes even notifications for blu-ray releases or whatever. Sure not that common, but still appear from time to time. Web-rips don't have logos, commercials, notifications or anything. Quality is fantastic in my eyes. Sure other people have even higher demands than me, but o well. a 500MB 1080p HEVC WEB-rip encode with all you additional features would be an amazing result. And just adding maybe even foreign subs as a bonus would make it the ultimate release I think. EDIT: around the time when Naruto Shippuuden ended crunchy-web-rips were still pretty abysmal. there was a reason after all WCP ( WithoutChoppyPlayback) appeared. So I am fine with early Boruto episodes being TV-Rips. But at least when they switched to the 1.4GB /episode the quality is superior to HDTV. I think that is all I can say for it. I leave the final decision to you guys. No matter what: Great work and thank you all for the effort and passion!
