Original Subtitles by [Aoi-Anime, Wasurenai and Licca](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/525070). RAWs used: [TV-Japan](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/45670) for most episodes, [HD-rip](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/295563) for 12, 23 and 24. 31 episodes are the same files between the sets, I checked all the other ones and picked the ones with the best image quality. Of course they're all ancient HDTV-rips, but sadly those are the best RAWs available, as [Amazon Prime Video](https://nyaa.iss.one/view/1490706) and the DVD (never ripped afaik) are SD (and Amazon looks like garbage). Nippon Animation are famously bad at BDs, but I can at least hope for a proper release some day. Wisperer OCR'd the subtitles. I did the rest: proofreading, TLC, editing, timing. These subs were in a sorry state. Beyond just proofreading (the OCR was surprisingly clean, so not too much to worry about there), a lot of editing and TLC needed to be done. In general, the Wasurenai-Licca section was the worst offender. Their translator apparently didn't speak either English or Japanese very well, and it manifested in very clumsy, overly literal word-by-word translations that often missed the point of the original sentence, and more often sounded ridiculous (TLC and editing were lacking as well, considering what they let slide). A lot of tenses had to be changed too. And apparently nobody on the team had actually watched the early parts of Cosette when they took over at episode 26 (they did 2-7 later on) or knew any of the historic context, so a number of edits had to be made to make it consistent and somewhat faithful to history. In doing so, all names were standardized according to the novel where possible. A few original names were changed as well, as I wasn't happy with all romanization choices, e.g. Pressoir is now Bressole and Mireille is Mylene. Other odd mistakes that were fixed include regular mixing up of Montreuil-sur-Mer and Montfermeil, a shopowner named Shuruvi who turned out to be the Jarden des Tuileries, priests that were called bishops and kings that were called emperors. I definitely didn't catch everything though, so there might be spots with rough translation or wording. As for Timing: Aoi-Anime's subs are not well-timed. I left most of these as is as they did not bother me immensely (and because I didn't feel like spending another 5-10 hours retiming). Only Episode 12 got notable edits as I had to retime it to a new source file. As for Wasurenai's, they were mostly good, except for Episodes 25 (due to some re-encoding shenanigans) and Episodes 26 and 27, which had subs that lasted way too long. These were all properly re-timed to fit in with the rest of the show. Most episodes were only spot-checked when retiming them to source (as they were the same files used for the original hardsub and thus lined up perfectly), so you may still find minor mistimings due to this. Although chances are it's something wrong in the fansub I didn't catch. Karaoke: The inserts later on in the show all had Kanji karaoke subs. I did not carry these forward as it would have cluttered the screen and/or would have been too small to read. The OP and ED karaoke were all standardized and properly synced up to the Japanese text. Original Fansub credits: These barely OCR'd at all, and I didn't feel like adding them back in manually when I already edited the subs a lot, so they're not here. You can still find them in the original files. Shoutout to Asairo though. Wish he could read this, but his English isn't good enough. What could be improved: #1 is definitely a better source, one that does not currently exist as far as I'm aware. Beyond that, all Wasurenai episodes could use another round of TLC, the Aoi-Anime solo episodes could use retiming, and the subtitles generally aren't styled. I have no problem with a sea of arial, but your tastes may differ.
